Crackdown on drug dealers who blight communities

12 April 2012

Drug dealers who trade on the streets in Camden and Brixton will face heavier penalties than offenders elsewhere under new sentencing rules announced today.

In guidelines to be sent to judges and magistrates, the Government's Sentencing Council says that drug supply, possession or production will be punished more severely if it is having a particularly negative impact upon a community.

Heavier penalties will also be imposed on those who allow pubs and clubs to be used for drug offences in such areas.

Camden and Brixton are likely to be affected because the street dealing there has led to complaints from residents and attracted "drug tourists" from elsewhere in London.

The reform also means that addicts who inject in parks and playgrounds could get longer in prison or a stiffer community penalty. Other changes announced today will result in shorter sentences for drug mules who are coerced or fooled into carrying substances, but harsher punishment for major importers and gang leaders who mastermind dealing operations.

The supply of drugs to prisoners will also attract heavier penalties, but those who buy drugs to share with friends without seeking to profit will be treated as lower-level offenders.

The Sentencing Council says it "recognises the impact that drug offending can have on the wider community, especially where it is persistent or prevalent".

Up to 300 more drugs producers are expected to be jailed each year as a result of today's reforms. There will be a three-month public consultation before final rules are published.
