Cuts are a hard road, says David Cameron

12 April 2012

David Cameron today told the Cabinet that spending cuts were "a hard road" but one that would lead to prosperity.

He gave the pep talk ahead of a showdown this afternoon between Chancellor George Osborne and Defence Secretary Liam Fox over massive cutbacks.

The Prime Minister is under pressure to take the final decision on the defence budget because the rift between the pair is so great.

He told this morning's Cabinet: "We are embarking on a hard road but it is a hard road to a better Britain."

He urged ministers to be frank with the public about the scale of the problem, including inheriting the biggest deficit in peacetime history from Labour. No hard choices could be ducked, he said.

"If we pull together to deal with the debt today, in a few years time the rewards will be felt by everyone," he said.
