A former champion triathlete who faced having her leg amputated after being hit by a lorry while cycling in north London told how her life has been "changed forever" and called on the Government to protect cyclists.

Doris Barrera- Torrico, a student from Gipsy Hill, suffered horrific leg injuries when she was knocked off her bike and crushed by a lorry in Holloway Road in 2007.

Ms Barrera-Torrico, who is originally from Chile but came to London to train as a music therapist, is now set to sue the driver of the lorry, Paul Moore, of Rotherham, for negligence, claiming damages of more than £300,000.

The 31-year-old has had nine operations since the crash.

She said: "I was pinned between the two lorries and then fell. I was absolutely terrified. I was on the ground but the lorry that hit me was still moving. I could see the bits of my leg on the road. More needs to be done to protect cyclists on the roads. It is far too dangerous at the moment."
