Deadline day for MPs to repay expenses

Cleaning up Parliament: MPs have until 6pm to repay their expenses
12 April 2012

The deadline for repayment of excessive parliamentary expenses is today, with MPs having until 6pm to give the money back or make arrangements to do so.

Former Whitehall mandarin Sir Thomas Legg's audit of five years of MPs' claims led to demands for around £1.12 million to be repaid.

Leader of the Commons Harriet Harman is bringing forward a motion to allow House authorities to deduct any money not repaid by today's deadline from members' salary, allowances or resettlement grant.

Commons authorities said no details would be released today of how many MPs had met the deadline and how much money had been repaid. This information would be made public "in due course".

Judge Sir Paul Kennedy is still considering 14 appeals against Sir Thomas's findings.
