Duke of Devonshire dies at Chatsworth

The Duke of Devonshire, owner of Chatsworth House, has died at home at the age of 84.

The Duke was one of Britain's richest landlords, and owned some 73,000 acres valued at £435 million.

A spokesman for his estate, Simon Seligman, said: "I can confirm that the Duke of Devonshire died late last night at his home."

The 11th Duke was never one to take his blessings for granted, and once described himself as: 'One of the very few people in the world who, when he wakes up in the morning, has nothing to complain about except having nothing to complain about.'

Born in 1920, he was educated at Eton and Trinity College Cambridge before serving with the Coldstream Guards in the Second World War, where he was awarded the Military Cross.

He lived at Chatsworth in the heart of Derbyshire's Peak District National Park.

Andrew Cavendish, the 11th Duke, married the Hon Deborah Mitford in 1941. They have three children, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
