The man suspected of terrorising women with sexual assaults across the United States over 12 years will appear in court in Connecticut today.

Police said DNA confirmed that Aaron Thomas, an unemployed lorry driver, was the man dubbed the East Coast Rapist, suspected of attacks on at least 17 women.

Thomas tried to hang himself on Saturday in his cell and was returned to jail after a brief hospital stay.

The East Coast Rapist is wanted for 17 rapes and other attacks in Connecticut, Maryland, Rhode Island and Virginia that began in 1997. The cases were linked by DNA.
