Ellis-Bextor tells of her pregnancy scare

Joy: Sophie Ellis-Bextor

SINGER Sophie Ellis-Bextor spoke for the first time today about the birth of her son Kitt, who was delivered nine weeks early.

The 30-year-old revealed she was set to fly to Russia for a gig when doctors discovered she was suffering from a life-threatening pregnancy condition.

Doctors at the Chelsea and Westminster hospital rushed her in for an emergency Caesarean after Ellis-Bextor developed pre-eclampsia, which can cause serious complications including high blood pressure.

Baby Kitt, who weighed only 2lb 10oz, had to spend a week in an incubator after his birth in February.

In an online blog, Ellis-Bextor said: "I was supposed to travel to Moscow to play a weekend gig. My consultant was due to give me permission to fly, as I was over 28 weeks pregnant.

"But when I went to see her, she was concerned that the baby was small for the number of weeks and I was also displaying some classic signs of pre-eclampsia; headaches, high blood pressure and swollen ankles. So, I wasn't going anywhere and I was sent home to rest. Shortly after, Kitt must have decided he was ready to arrive into the world."

This is the second pregnancy drama for Ellis-Bextor, wife of The Feeling guitarist Richard Jones.

Her first son Sonny, now four, was also born by Caesarean section after she was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia.
