Emin demands return of signed handkerchief stolen from Oxfam

Dream over: the £600 piece, found in a bag of old clothes, was stolen days later
13 April 2012

A rare handkerchief embroidered by Tracey Emin, pictured, was stolen from the charity shop where it was on sale.

The piece, worth up to £600, disappeared from the Herne Hill shop window on December 21 during the Christmas rush.

Staff had been elated after finding it in a bag of clothes left by an anonymous donor. It bore the words: "Be Faithful to your Dreams Tracey Emin 1999."

Manager Gokcen Erdinc said: "They were going for up to £600 at auction. We put it in the window for £300. I thought it would make a nice Christmas present."

The sale would have funded clean water for third world countries. Emin demanded the work be returned. She said: "I am appalled and the person should return it by post."

Anyone with information is asked to call Southwark CID on 020 7232 6641 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
