Equitable - nothing but sympathy

TREASURY Minister Ruth Kelly again spurned calls for compensation for Equitable Life victims in a Commons debate. But Shadow Chancellor Oliver Letwin said Ministers did not really want to find out whether compensation would be payable. There had been 'systems failure' under both Labour and the Tories.

Tory MP Mark Francois said: 'Hundreds of thousands of people are now suffering. What has the Government got to offer those people other than sympathy?'.

Kelly said it offered security that such a thing was less likely to happen again. 'The Treasury cannot underwrite each and every business up and down the country.'
