Flights halted in huge Portugal strike over cuts

12 April 2012

A one-day general strike against austerity measures in Portugal halted flights and trains today.

It was launched in protest at job losses, tax increases and pay cuts agreed as the price of a £67billion EU bailout for the crisis-hit nation of 11million people. Public services were also hit but police escorted refuse lorries through a picket line in Lisbon after courts ordered that essential facilities be maintained.

The economy is set to shrink by nearly three per cent next year.
