Food firms hit back over salt levels

Food giants under fire for failing to cut salt in their products today warned that reduced salt products would be left on shelves.

Manufacturers fear customers will find products with a reduced salt content too bland.

They spoke out as ministers prepared to name and shame companies they believe are not doing enough to cut salt. The alleged offenders include Heinz, Nestlé¬ McDonald's and United Biscuits.

Martin Paterson, deputy director-general of the Food and Drink Federation, said: "The industry is committed to playing a constructive role in government's food and health plans but we can only move at the pace dictated by consumers. A reduced salt product left on the shelf by consumers or to which they add salt will not benefit anyone."
