Four bailed over murder of teenager in north London

Selfless: Schoolboy Negus McLean died protecting his younger brother
12 April 2012

Four youths arrested in connection with the murder of a schoolboy who died while "selflessly protecting" his younger brother have been bailed.

Two men, aged 20 and 18, and two boys, aged 16 and 14, were arrested following the killing of 15-year-old Negus McClean, who was stabbed in the chest and thigh on Sunday night.

The suspects were bailed to return to a north London police station pending further inquiries, the Metropolitan Police said.

The 16-year-old must present himself next Monday while the other three were bailed until May 6.
Police continue to appeal for witnesses to, and information about, the murder in the boy's neighbourhood of Edmonton, north London.

Negus, an aspiring musician, was taken to Royal London Hospital but died a few hours later.
A post-mortem examination gave cause of death as a stab wound to the heart.

It is believed around 13 young black men on bicycles chased him before he was attacked.
Detective Chief Inspector Stephen Clayman said yesterday: "We continue to seek witnesses and those with information about who was responsible for this murder.

"It is vital that the public, and especially young people, have the trust and confidence to speak to the police in these situations."

Negus's cousin Noel, 25, said he died protecting his brother in a "selfless act".

The tragic teenager was hoping to embark on a career as a rapper after leaving school, relatives said.

His younger brother - believed to have recently started secondary school - saw Negus collapse after being attacked by four youths on bicycles after a fight over a BlackBerry phone, locals claimed.

Anyone with information is asked to call 020 8345 3775 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
