Four jailed over break

12 April 2012

Four men have been jailed in France for four months for breaking down security barriers at the Channel Tunnel, allowing hundreds of illegal immigrants to try to cross into Britain on Christmas Day.

In fast-track legal proceedings yesterday, the court also ordered the four - three Kurdish Iraqis and an Afghan - to pay £195,000 to Eurotunnel. More than 500 people who invaded the tunnel were turned back by police.

The four accused, who had been staying at a Red Cross refugee camp at Sangatte, near Calais, denied the charges. Some 39 others are to face trial in the coming weeks.
