Four quizzed over 'Barbie bandit' heist

13 April 2012

Police hunting a pair of teenage girls dubbed the "Barbie Bandits" after being caught on camera giggling as they robbed a US bank wearing huge designer sunglasses have arrested two 19-year-olds and a cashier.

Authorities alleged the "heist" was actually a conspiracy between the trio and a fourth man who was also arrested.

The girls, Ashley Miller and Heather Johnston, together with bank cashier Benny Herman Allen, 22, were charged with felony theft and marijuana possession after a brief car chase in Acworth, Georgia.

Michael Chastang, 27, was charged with felony theft and drug trafficking. Two young women wearing trendy tight jeans and the bug-eyed shades favoured by Hollywood starlets were filmed walking into the Bank of America supermarket branch in an affluent Atlanta suburb and simply handing a note to the cashier demanding money.

The blonde and brunette twosome smiled and laughed as they waited for the money before strolling out as casually as they had entered and making their getaway by unknown means.

Police would not reveal what the note said or how much money was stolen, but called it a "considerable" sum.

"It was a conspiracy to take money from the bank," Cobb County Police spokeswoman Cassie Reece said.

"They were in on it."
