G20 victim's widow speaks out at service

Memorial: Julia Tomlinson, with son Paul King, will talk about her loss

The widow of Ian Tomlinson will give her first speech about her husband's death at a memorial service in the City this evening.

Julia Tomlinson told the Standard she expects 500 people to attend the candlelit vigil at Royal Exchange, off Threadneedle Street, close to where Mr Tomlinson died eight months ago.

The newspaper vendor, 47, died after a police officer apparently hit him with a baton and pushed him to the ground during G20 protest clashes on 1 April.

Mrs Tomlinson said she was still "demanding justice" but added: "I will be talking about how he died and why he died - but mostly I'll be talking about how much we all miss Ian.

"The event is just a memorial. It is not about putting pressure on the police or on anyone else. It is just a way for people to remember Ian and what happened to him on that day."

Mayor Boris Johnson has sent the family an email to read out during the service.

The family has made a new complaint to the Independent Police Complains Commission, alleging that a senior Scotland Yard officer misled investigators over Mr Tomlinson's death.
