Girl, 2, in hospital after savage dog attack

12 April 2012

A toddler was in a serious condition in hospital today after being mauled by a dog.

The two-year-old girl was attacked by the animal, a Japanese akita believed to be her family's pet, in Hailsham, East Sussex, police said.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "The injuries are serious but not life-threatening. The dog will be destroyed."

The girl was savaged in either her family home or the home of relatives, police added.

Her parents were by her bedside in hospital.

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokeswoman said staff attended the incident at 8.15pm yesterday.

She said: "It was understood the child was mauled by the family pet.

"The toddler was taken to hospital under blue lights, however, we don't believe the injuries are life-threatening."
