A "Gateway" company pays a fee to your network for the right to send messages.

It generates random mobile numbers which it contacts in a single "hit".

The message is a tease: typically a competition or invitation to chat. Anyone who replies, punching in the code that accompanies it, unknowingly subscribes to a service and is plagued with messages.

To block them ring the Telephone Preference Service on 0845 0700707. Tell your network direct, or ICSTIS on 0800 500212.
