Husband refuses to see bride’s murder detectives

"Set up": friends fear Shrien Dewani is being treated as a suspect in the murder of his wife Anni
12 April 2012

A British businessman whose new bride was killed on honeymoon in South Africa today said he will not return to the country following claims police were now treating him as a suspect.

Shiren Dewani, 31, has denied any involvement in the death of his wife Anni, 28, after his friends raised fears he was being "set up".

Mr Dewani's publicist Max Clifford said today: "This poor man has been through a living nightmare."

It comes after a South African newspaper alleged that detectives want the millionaire businessman to return to Cape Town for questioning.

Mr Dewani had told how he was dragged away screaming from his wife after being attacked by gunmen as they visited a township on 13 November. She was found dead in the vehicle the next day.

Three men have been charged including the couple's taxi driver Zola Tongo, 31.

He is due to appear before magistrates on Monday alongside fellow suspects Xolile Mngeni, 23, and 26-year-old Mzwamadoda Qwabe.
