Inheritance tax deal saves Degas dancer for the nation

13 April 2012

A bronze sculpture of a dancer by Edgar Degas has been saved for the nation.

The work belonged to art dealer and historian Lillian Browse, who died last year aged 99.

Preparation à la Danse: Pied Droit en Evant will go on display at London's Courtauld Institute.

A painting by William Nicholson, Begonias, has also been saved and will be displayed at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.

The works were offered in lieu of inheritance tax from Mrs Browse's estate.
