John Terry sues over cigarette photo

Copyright row: the image of John Terry with smoke-damaged lungs
13 April 2012

Chelsea defender John Terry is taking legal action after his photograph was used in India to warn of the dangers of smoking.

The England captain, 31, was said to be outraged after he discovered that an unauthorised image of him with smoke-damaged lungs was put on Gold Flake cigarette packets. The image was sanctioned for use by the Indian government.

Representatives of the Chelsea defender today said he was instructing lawyers over the apparent copyright blunder.

Keith Cousins, of Elite Management, said: "We were sent these photographs and they certainly look like him. We have reviewed this matter with our client and have instructed solicitors in India to take appropriate action."
