Karzai bans Nato strikes on civilians

Afghan President Hamid Karzai said today he would no longer allow Nato air strikes on houses.

At least nine civilians were killed in a strike in Helmand province at the weekend, according to Nato figures, but Afghan officials said 14 died, including 10 children and two women.

"From this moment, air strikes on the houses of people are not allowed," Mr Karzai said.

Nato said the strikes, intended to hit Taliban targets, were always conducted with the government's approval.
