Ken Livingstone: Tax the super-rich to subsidise fees

Free education: former mayor Ken Livingstone
12 April 2012

Ken Livingstone today called for taxes on the "super-rich" and cuts in military budgets to subsidise tuition fees.

The Labour mayoral candidate pledged support for hundreds of students occupying universities in London, including the School of Oriental and African Studies, UCL, King's College London and the Slade.

Mr Livingstone said: "The best way to pay is a progressive tax system."

Criticising Sir Philip Green, he said: "Why should someone earn over half a million pounds a year? We must stop the super-rich wriggling out of paying tax."

He added: "We could have provided free education for the last 10 years for what we have spent on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan."

History student Bernard Goyder, 19, said: "Having Ken Livingstone support us gives rise to the idea that occupation is a legitimate form of protest."
