THOSE hoping for a white Christmas and New Year were set for disappointment today - except for people in central London.

A Met Office spokesman said: "We are not expecting any snow over Christmas. We have warm air across the country and it is nowhere near cold enough. Conditions will get colder over the next few days but it looks like we will stay without snow into the New Year."

It was a different picture in Soho, however, for shoppers and residents who enjoyed a seasonal sprinkling of snow of the fake variety supplied by the restaurant Quo Vadis to celebrate Christmas.

A restaurant worker said: "Nature didn't give us snow so we provided it for ourselves."
