London drivers to get box junction fines refunded

Hundreds of motorists wrongly fined for stopping in a box junction are to be given their money back.

Ealing council has set aside £35,000 raised from fines to refund drivers who were ticketed for halting on yellow cross-hatchings in Greenford.

The decision came after officers realised the junction, where Otter Road meets Greenford Road, was too small for legal requirements. The rest of the boxes in the borough are now being checked.

The council's cabinet member for environment and transport, Bassam Mahfouz, said: "We need to regain people's confidence. We need to show this isn't about raising money but it's about safety, traffic flow and making sure certain junctions work."

About 600 people who paid for the "offence" will receive their money back.
