Zac Goldsmith's sister Jemima has taken an extraordinary swipe at her brother over his unsuccessful campaign for London Mayor.

The journalist appeared to question the Conservative candidate's integrity as she congratulated Labour's Sadiq Khan for his City Hall win.

Mr Goldsmith was criticised by some for using "dog whistle" tactics during the course of a bitter campaign.

She posted: “Congratulations to @sadiqkhan-1st Muslim Mayor of London, a city for all cultures, backgrounds & religions. A great example to young Muslims.

“Sad that Zac's campaign did not reflect who I know him to be an eco friendly, independent, minded politician with integrity.”

Her comments sparked praise on Twitter - while some even questioned whether she voted against her sibling.

TV's June Sarpong tweeted: "What a gracious message to @SadiqKhan and all Londoners who believe in Unity."

While another man posted: "respect for u jemima. U have a big heart."

And Channel 4 broadcaster Michael Crick wrote: "Did you vote for Khan by any chance?"

Mr Khan made history tonight after he romped to victory in the London mayoral race.

His win marked the first time a Muslim figure had held the role of London Mayor.
