M&S springs a surprise 20 per cent sale as it launches new range for next year

MARKS & SPENCER launched a new range for middle-aged women today just as it prepares for a one-day 20 per cent off sale tomorrow.

The sale, a tactic not used since 2004, is unusual in the weeks running up to Christmas but Sir Stuart Rose, the store's executive chairman, is believed to have made his decision based on reduced consumer spending in recent weeks. It is only the second time in M&S history that a pre-Christmas promotion has taken place.

The new Portfolio collection is good news for over-45s who have been more than a little vexed in recent seasons by walking into M&S and being greeted by a sea of sequin tube dresses. Portfolio is less fashion-forward than ranges such as Autograph and Limited Collection, and focuses on basics, such as trench coats, unstructured jackets and shift dresses in a mainly monochrome palette with splashes of colour.

Highlights included a £55 navy linen mix safari jacket, an £18 striped T-shirt and a pair of white linen-mix trousers costing £29.50.

"We've listened closely to our customers, and what they unanimously wanted was outfit-building pieces that they could wear now but still carry forward to next season," said Neil Hendy, the store's director of womenswear. "Our 45-plus customer is very aware of trends, but she is not looking for 'fashion fashion'. Portfolio answers this need."

Asked whether the range was extra price-conscious, Mr Hendy agreed. "We have been very focused on value, but what we haven't sacrificed is the quality for which M& S is famous. There are tough conditions ahead, so you have to tick all the boxes: flattering fit, good fabrics and attention to detail." Accessories, especially footwear, are especially strong in the other spring ranges.
