Harry Potter author JK Rowling is considering putting bookmarks bearing the face of Madeleine in copies of her final instalment about the world's favourite boy wizard

Harry Potter author JK Rowling is considering putting bookmarks bearing the face of Madeleine in copies of her final instalment about the world's favourite boy wizard.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and last book in the series, is due out on July 21.

Meanwhile, Madeleine's parents have vowed to stay in Portugal looking for their daughter until there was "absolutely no hope" of finding her.

Mr and Mrs McCann, both 38, are midway through a series of trips around Europe to ask for help to find their daughter.

They plan to fly to Berlin on Wednesday and on to Amsterdam and then to Morocco a few days later to raise the profile of Madeleine's case. Mr McCann said:

"I would have to feel that the investigation in Portugal has been exhausted (before we leave), I think we are a long way away from that.

"We would like to be here, obviously this is where she was abducted from, the investigation is centred around here and we certainly want to be close to that.

Gerry and Kate McCann vow to stay in Portugal until there is 'absolutely no hope'

"You might even argue that the hope is diminishing as time goes on but the investigation is still active and we will not give up until there is absolutely no hope."

Mr McCann said there was no option but to believe that she was alive. "If you give up hope you are basically saying she is dead,", he said. "No parent would do that.

"We have our low moments but generally what you see with us is what you get. We have been very positive, we know it helps us and we know it helps other people looking for Madeleine."

Describing her abduction, he said: "It's like the same as having a bereavement, being diagnosed with cancer.

Madeleine, aged 4, has been missing since 3 May

"There's lots of mixed emotions and anger is one of them."

Mr McCann said the nights were the worst as they had more time to think.

"When you are going to bed you tend to be more contemplative but we're usually so tired by the time we get to bed that we do actually fall asleep quite quickly.

"We're having good sleep every night, five or six hours uninterrupted, apart from the kids."

Mr McCann said they refused to blame each other for not being there when Madeleine was taken.

"Of course we feel guilty, we feel that we've let her down, we were not there at that moment she was abducted.

"And of course we are her parents we love her absolutely desperately but what we're focusing on is what we can do to influence it.

"We have never subconsciously or consciously thought it was Kate's fault, it's my fault, we're a couple in this, we're responsible parents.

"What we need to look at is the person that took her. It's not our fault - they were determined to take her for one reason or another."
