Man killed while parents were in next room

A student support worker at an east London school has been stabbed to death in his home while his parents were in the next room.

Police were called to a flat in Limehouse on Sunday night where they found a 22-year-old man with a serious stab wound. He was taken to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel but died later.

Distraught relatives outside his family home today named the man as Amirul Haq and said he was a mediation officer at the nearby St Paul's Way Community School. One family member said Mr Haq was stabbed as his mother and father sat in the next room of their home in Dod Street.

Friends said Mr Haq's mother is blind and was screaming for help after she and her husband found their son stabbed at about 7.40pm on Sunday.

A relative, who did not want to be named, said that Mr Haq had invited his attacker into the home.

He said: "The person that did this was in the house for two hours before it happened. His parents were in the next room and heard a loud noise. His mother is blind but when they went to check what was going on, his father saw someone running out of the house.Their son was lying face down on his bed and when his father turned him over, he saw the stab wound. He had been stabbed through the heart and there was blood everywhere. When the ambulance arrived, they opened up his chest in the house. He was taken to hospital and given a 10 per cent chance of survival but he died soon after."

A neighbour said: "Amirul was a fantastic person. He did so much work for children and other people and was never in trouble. He worked with kids and that was what he loved to do."

A 17-year-old was set to appear at Tower Hamlets magistrates' court today charged with the murder.
