Map that's hot property for house hunters

12 April 2012

It's the ultimate tool for settling the old dinner party argument - which parts of town are hot and which are not.

A new property "heat map" of London reveals, street by street, neighbourhoods where the market is sizzling and those stuck in the ice age.

Areas with highest asking prices are coloured red with - in descending order - orange, yellow, green and blue representing the cheaper districts.

The map, devised by property website Zoopla, highlights London's great crescent of affluence, also known as the bonus belt, arguably the biggest concentration of high-value homes on the planet.

The red curve stretches from Hampstead, home to Mel C and Jonathan Ross; through Gwyneth Paltrow country in Belsize Park; to Notting Hill, where Stella McCartney lives; then to Fulham, Barnes, Richmond and Wimbledon, home to tennis star Laura Robson.

It also highlights oases of desirability such as Dulwich, Greenwich and Clapham amid a sea of green and blue also-rans. The colour coding reveals starkly how in many parts of London expensive and cheaper neighbourhoods live side by side. And it indicates where relative bargains still exist.

Lawrence Hall of Zoopla said: "A picture tells a thousand words. Heatmaps allow users to easily visualise property values across the UK.

"They could help property hunters identify areas that could be up and coming, that fall between a hot and not so hot area. They'll give you a good sense of where your budget could take you." Go to zoopla.co.uk/heatmaps
