Marmite spread on M1 - don't you just hate it?

12 April 2012

A tanker carrying more than 20 tonnes of Marmite overturned on the M1.

Police shut a section of the motorway in South Yorkshire at about 10.15pm last night following the crash and spill its contents onto the carriageway. The road remained closed in both directions between junctions 32 and 33 near Sheffield this morning and was expected to cause chaos for rush-hour commuters.

The driver of the tanker, which was involved in a collision with a motorcaravan, was taken to hospital but was not thought to be seriously injured. A police spokesman said: "The tanker was carrying 23.5 tonnes of waste yeast and overturned
"Some of the contents were spilled on the northbound carriageway and we are in the process of emptying the remaining contents of the tanker and clearing up the spillage before it can be moved and the road reopened."
