Master of Olympic photography sets the viewfinder for 2012

Stunning: renowned sports photographer Bob Martin’s Time Magazine shot of Barcelona Olympics in 1992
12 April 2012

He has captured the defining images at Olympic Games from Barcelona to Beijing. Now Bob Martin, the renowned British sports photographer, has begun the search for the ultimate shot of London 2012.

His aim is to frame Olympic action against iconic images of the capital — royal palaces, City skyscrapers or the period architecture of Westminster.

As official press operations manager he will not take pictures himself but will marshal an army of more than 1,000 accredited photographers. Photogenic sports such as road cycling, equestrian events and beach volleyball will be scheduled for the opening weekend.

Images might include British cyclist Mark Cavendish in front of Buckingham Palace or a sunset shot of the beach volleyball at Horse Guards Parade, with the London Eye and Gherkin in the background. Martin said: "I've been to many Olympics and I am very keen on iconic images as it gives you a sense of place. I don't want any opportunities to be missed in London."

Martin has covered every Olympics since Seoul in 1988. He is three times British sports photographer of the year.
