Boris Johnson today called on Londoners to "get festive" as he unveiled the line-up for a free concert in Trafalgar Square that will start a week of celebrations in the lead-up to the royal wedding.

Opera tenor Alfie Boe and Brit-nominated singer Newton Faulkner will headline the
St George's day event on Saturday, April 23. Organisers hope to attract crowds of up to 50,000.

The Easter weekend gig, six days before the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, will also star The Theory of 6 Degrees, the youngest band to appear at Glastonbury.

The Mayor said: "On St George's Day we celebrate the fantastic talent and creativity that make this such a wonderfully exciting place to live - not just London, but the country as a whole.

"And as the nation prepares for the most momentous occasion of the year, we are putting on a joyous and inspirational free event to help get everyone in the mood. So have a full English and head down to Trafalgar Square."

A Rhythm of London section will showcase new talent. The entire event runs from 12.30pm-6.30pm.

The square's capacity tops 10,000 and organisers expect to achieve five times that throughout the day as spectators come and go to see their favourite acts.
