Minister: hostage deal is 'win for terror'

An Israeli cabinet minister has called a landmark deal with Hamas to free an Israeli soldier a "huge victory for terror".

Infrastructure minister Uzi Landau said the swap deal provided an "incentive to kill Israelis and to carry out further abductions". Most Israelis support the deal but there is concern that the Palestinian prisoners will resume militant activities.

The cabinet endorsed the deal in a 26-3 vote. It envisages bringing home Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit within days, in exchange for some 1,000 Palestinian prisoners to be released in two batches. Shalit was captured by Gaza militants more than five years ago.
