Monday starts with chaos on roads and Tube

Thousands of commuters suffered travel chaos today as parts of London ground to a halt following a fatal car crash and a breakdown on the Tube.

Problems on the roads in west London began in the early hours when a driver lost control of his car and hit a lamp post on the North Circular in Gunnersbury. Routes between Gunnersbury Avenue and Chiswick roundabout remained closed, causing gridlock on access roads from the M4.

On the Tube, a Victoria line train broke down for more than 30 minutes at Oxford Circus, causing mass congestion as following trains were forced to back-up along the line.

The train was finally moved but by 10am there were "severe delays" across the Victoria Line.
