Mother's plea to find hit-run driver who killed student jogger

12 April 2012

A mother today appealed for help in tracing a driver who hit her daughter while she was jogging and left her dying at the roadside.

Elizabeth Beach-MacGeagh, 20, was struck as she crossed a road in East Barnet at about 8pm on Wednesday last week. Witnesses reported seeing a blue BMW coupé speeding away as she lay fatally injured.

The student was taken to hospital with serious head injuries after the collision on the corner of Netherlands Road and Temple Avenue. She died in the early hours of the following day.

Miss Beach-MacGeagh, from Marlborough, Wiltshire, was studying history at Bristol University. She had been staying with friends in Barnet while she took part in a work placement scheme at the West End offices of the Moschino fashion company during her holidays.

Today, her mother Vicki Beach paid tribute to her daughter. She said: "Lizzie was 20 years old, the baby of our family. She has two sisters and a brother. She had just completed her second year at Bristol University studying history, and managed to juggle a job, writing for the university magazine, a great social life, while still getting firsts in her essays.

"It is impossible to sum dear Lizzie up in only a few sentences. She was the best daughter and the most loving little sister. She had the most radiant smile and everyone who met her melted. She is what made our family, she was our bright star and life without her seems too unbearable to imagine. A fateful moment out jogging ended a life just begun and too soon. The depths of our grief cannot be imagined."

Detective Inspector Simon Pilbeam, of the Met's collision investigation unit, said the car was seen heading north in Netherlands Road after the collision. Police recovered some wreckage and are searching for a metallic blue BMW 3 Series coupé with front and near-side damage.

Mr Pilbeam said: "The driver of the vehicle must have known that they had hit something or someone but chose not to stop. To fully investigate what happened last Wednesday we need to speak to the driver of the car and hear their account of events."
