Move over JLS world's oldest football chant to top charts

12 April 2012

A London actor singing the oldest football chant in the world is outselling Cheryl Cole, boyband JLS and Westlife in the race to top the music charts.

Cardiff City fan Jonathan Owen recorded the song "I'll Be There" to raise money for a statue of Fred Keenor, captain of the 1927 FA Cup-winning team, at the club's ground.

It was sung by Welsh miners during the General Strike of 1926, and is believed to be the oldest chant still regularly sung.

Now, the song is outselling Kylie Minogue and the others in the pre-release charts and is expected to top the charts next week.

"Not a single penny was spent on press, marketing or pluggers. It really shows the power of a viral campaign," said Mr Owen, who lives in west London and has starred in Shameless.

One of the original driving forces behind the idea was former Stereophonics drummer Stuart Cable, who died in June. Now Mr Owen and his group are dedicating the project to his memory.
