Mr Frosty joins reindeers in the sky after attacking handler

Santa’s helper: Mr Frosty and Kay Davies

A businesswoman was recovering today after being attacked by a rampaging 6ft reindeer.

Self-employed Kay Davies, 51, was working with the normally placid animal, called Mr Frosty, on a farm when it charged her, knocking her to the ground with its antlers.

The animal trampled Ms Davies before colleagues heard her cries for help and dragged her to safety. She had been tending the animal at Churchfield Farm, near Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire, before the attack on Tuesday. Police and paramedics were hampered by the reindeer, which took almost 40 minutes to bring under control.

An ambulance spokeswoman said: "The crew needed to call for urgent back-up as the animal was very angry and wouldn't let them near the patient. It was eventually captured and the woman treated at the scene and later conveyed to hospital."

She added: "Reports were of a reindeer on the loose and initially that the woman had injuries to her head, chest, groin, legs and ribs but these turned out to be superficial."

Mr Frosty was later put down by a vet, who was called by police.

Ms Davies's business, Wedding Horses, is based at Churchfield Farm and supplies horses and carriages for weddings and Christmas parties.

The farm's yard manager Dominic Sewell said it was a "freak accident". He added: "The reindeer could take a five-bar gate off its hinges with the power in those antlers. It had used its antlers to charge Kay and she didn't stand a chance. It was uncontrollable. I tried to help her but it just smashed me to the ground. The whole thing was very scary. Kay is only alive thanks to one of her friends who managed to drag her to safety."

Mr Sewell said the animal was displaying behaviour which was normal during rutting season.

"Because it was the only reindeer on the farm its only companions were humans, which may be one of the reasons why this happened," he said.
