Murray thanks Standard for tip-off over royal visit

Andy Murray has again thanked the Evening Standard for tipping him off about the royal visit to Wimbledon.

The British No 1 twice told the world's media he had no idea the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge would be on Centre Court until the Standard told him.

It meant the 24-year-old was able to give them a well-received bow at the end of his straight sets victory over Richard Gasquet - with the newlyweds later patting him on the back and telling him "well done" for his performance.

The Standard was first to publish news of Kate and William's trip to the All England Club and tracked Murray down on the practice courts yesterday.

Following his demolition of the Frenchman, Murray told the BBC that despite the Standard's tip-off, he had not practised his bow because "I didn't know if my source was winding me up".

He later told the world's press: "I didn't know they were coming. I wasn't told. So as I was walking to the court someone from the Evening Standard told me. I didn't know if it was true, because no one else had heard anything (but) obviously I saw them when I went out."

He said his bow was "the right thing to do", adding: "If I'd known they were coming, I would have shaved. I was thinking as I came off I was sweaty and very hairy. I said to them, 'I'm sorry, I'm a bit sweaty'. But it was very nice to get to meet them."
