Museum has survival tips for warmer world of 2050

How global warming will change the world by 2050 is the subject of a new exhibition opening at the Science Museum on Saturday.

The Science Of Survival has hands-on displays that allow families to, among other things, design their own eco-vehicle and examine potential superfoods of the future.

Content director Stephen Foulger said it would help to educate children about the changes they could make now to help prevent problems later.

He said: "There are no bigger questions at the moment than how we cope with changing climate and the availability of resources like oil and water.

"We know everyone is bombarded by messages about living more sustainably but these can be confusing and contradictory."

The exhibition has seven areas - Briefing, Drinking, Eating, Enjoying, Moving, Building and Future City - and each one uses artefacts, sound bites, stories and games to explore some of the ways people could live more sustainably.

Throughout the show, a tracking device follows the visitor, saving data they enter into the interactive exhibits. At the end, it is used to show the visitor how changes made to their lifestyle could influence their future.

Chris West, director of the UK Climate Impacts Programme, who offered advice on the exhibition, said: "Climate change will make changes to our day-to-day lives here in Britain, as well as having devastating effects elsewhere.

"This exhibition gives visitors an insight into the science behind how we may deal with climate change and other environmental challenges.

"It also demonstrates how science and technology could help us find solutions for the future."
