My shame, by the ‘bloodgate’ rugby doctor

12 April 2012

The rugby doctor at the centre of the "bloodgate" scandal said today she was "ashamed".

Dr Wendy Chapman sobbed as she told a General Medical Council disciplinary hearing she did not know why she succumbed to "huge pressure" from Harlequins winger Tom Williams, who asked her to cut his lip after he bit a fake-blood capsule.

His "injury" meant a specialist kicker could come on in April's cup tie against Leinster, who held on to win 6-5.

Dr Chapman has admitted to the hearing that she cut Williams with a stitch cutter in the changing rooms after match officials made inquiries.

She described the moment she realised she had been "duped".

"I was horrified, just horrified. This is a very huge game and they cheated," she said. "I was very ashamed that I gave into the pressure."
