Parents-to-be offered gene tests

Tests that can remove the chances of couples having a baby with an inherited disease were approved by the Government's genetic watchdog today.

The Human Genetics Commission said there were no ethical, legal or social reasons why couples should not have DNA pre-conception tests, which could prevent children being born with life-threatening conditions such as cystic fibrosis and sickle-cell disease.

Genetic screening is currently only available to people whose family history or ethnicity suggest a high risk, and often only when they are already pregnant. The simple saliva tests cost between £100 and £700 per couple.
