Pensioner is £1m Bond winner

13 April 2012

A BRISTOL woman has scooped the £1m Premium Bond jackpot prize for August. The woman, a pensioner who has chosen to remain anonymous, holds Bonds worth £3,000.

She bought her winning bond in February 2003.

The popularity of Premium Bonds has grown dramatically over the past five years as the amount invested has doubled to over £24 billion.

From September the prize fund rate will go up to 2.80% per annum tax free with odds fixed at 24,000 to 1.

The change in the prize fund rate will increase the number of monthly prizes from 870,000 to a million for the first time.

Later this month, a new version of Ernie, the machine that generates the winning numbers, will be unveiled at the Science Museum in Kensington, west London.
