Police chiefs to back 'FBI' agency for UK

Proposals for the most radical shake-up of law enforcement in more than 30 years will take a significant move forward today when endorsed by senior police chiefs.

The plans include a single body for dealing with organised crime, frontier police and a restructuring of constabularies. They will be outlined today by leading police officers at a conference on the future of policing.

A Whitehall committee led by the Home Office has consulted police and other agencies on the plans.

Tony Blair revealed in July that he was considering a "new, dedicated national agency which could share intelligence, expertise and investigative talents".

One plan was for an FBIstyle agency that would combine the capabilities of the National Criminal Intelligence Service, the National Crime Squad and Customs.
