Prince William visits Australia in final leg of 'disaster tour'

Greeting: Prince William meets members of the community in Tully, Queensland
12 April 2012

Prince William arrives for the last leg of his tour of disaster-stricken areas today.

The royal is visiting Victoria in Australia, which was hit by floods in January after particularly heavy rainfall.

Thousands of evacuations were called for by the State Emergency Service, while properties were flooded, and thousands lost their power supply.

The floods closed hundreds of roads, disrupted train services and devastated farms.

The visit to Victoria is the latest in what some have dubbed Prince William's "disaster tour", which has seen him take in devastation caused by several natural disasters across New Zealand and Australia.

He witnessed the decimated centre of Christchurch, hit by an earthquake on February 22, then visited towns ravaged by Cyclone Yasi in north-east Queensland, before visiting flood-ravaged areas in the south of the state yesterday.

Today he will visit Kerang in Victoria for a briefing about floods across the state, before going on a tour of the area.

He will also visit a rural property in Benjeroop which is still mainly underwater then go to the town of Murrabit where he will attend a community barbecue.
Yesterday the prince met the family of Jordan Rice, who urged rescuers to "save my brother", in Toowoomba, and also met families of those who lost their lives to the floods in Queensland, as well as accepting an Akubra hat as a gift.
