Ringtones to outsell singles

Sales of mobile phone ringtones on the internet are set to outstrip singles this year. The revenue from distributing ringtones is expected to grow by 60 per cent on 2002 to £70 million.

The Mobile Data Association say the new polyphonic phones with high-quality sound have boosted sales for hit songs costing up to £3.50.

Top of the UK ringtone chart is Breath by Blu Cantrell featuring Sean Paul.

In contrast the record industry has been hit by internet piracy.
