Sarah court watches videos of brothers

The jury in the Sarah Payne murder trial today watched videos of her brothers recreating their last moments with their sister.

The films were made one day and two days after the eight-year-old disappeared.

They show first Lee, then 13, and later Luke, 11, leading parents Sara and Michael, a detective and the cameraman through the cornfield where they had played.

Roy Whiting, the man accused of abducting and murdering Sarah, first sat hunched forward in the dock, then lent back in his chair in the Lewes courtroom and stifled a yawn.

On screen the group was seen in July last year leaving the grandparents' home in Kingston Gorse, near Littlehampton. They walked up Peak Lane and turned left into Kingston Lane.

On both films Lee or Luke would duck through a hole in the hedge and into the cornfield. It was here they had played with Sarah, their younger sister Charlotte, then five, and their dog Fifa. On the videos both boys could be seen pointing to where they last saw their sister.

Lee could be seen pointing to where he saw a white van and a "scruffy, dirty" driver with yellowish teeth grinning and waving as it sped away.

When the TV screens were switched off Sally O'Neill, QC, defending, asked the judge for an adjournment for "more time to speak to Mr Whiting".

Roy Whiting, 42, a part-time builder and mechanic from Littlehampton, has pleaded not guilty to murder and abduction.

The case continues.
