Sections plan for Navy carriers

12 April 2012

TWO new British aircraft carriers, costing a total of £2.5bn, could be built in sections at dockyards throughout Britain, Thales of France said today.

The shipbuilder has drawn up a plan called the Superblock system to build the 500,000-ton vessels.

The project would involve Swan Hunter of Newcastle, BAE Systems Marine in Glasgow, Harland & Wolff of Belfast and Vosper Thornycroft of Portsmouth.

Final assembly of the two vessels would be carried out by Devonport Management in Plymouth.
