Six million people employ home cleaners

Britain may be in the grip of austerity but it would appear that householders are not allowing it to affect the cleanliness of their homes.

One million more people employ a cleaner than they did 10 years ago. New figures show that despite the recession and Government cuts, more than six million people employ domestic help - with many saying they do not have the time to do their own housework.

The survey discovered that 12 per cent of the population hires help. Almost a quarter of those questioned said that they paid for cleaners because they "didn't like doing domestic chores".

Nearly a third in the survey, carried out on behalf of Churchill Home Insurance, said they did not have time to complete the tasks themselves, which rose to nearly half for those aged 18
to 32.

Nearly a decade ago think tank the Work Foundation undertook a similar survey in which it found that only one in 10, or five million people, paid for domestic help.
