Somalis kidnap European aid workers

12 April 2012

Two European aid workers have been kidnapped in Kenya by suspected Somali gangsters.

Gunmen seized them from the world's largest refugee camp, the Dadaab, after shooting their Kenyan driver in the neck.

The pair are not thought to be British. Kenyan police chief Leo Nyongesa said the authorities were following the kidnappers by road and air and the Kenya-Somalia border had been closed.

The attack follows the recent kidnappings of a British tourist and a Frenchwoman from Kenyan resorts near the Somali border and the murder of the British woman's husband.

Somali pirates have held dozens of ships and crew to ransom. A spokesman for Médecines Sans Frontières in London said: "I can confirm we have had an incident in Dadaab camp. One driver was injured and he is in hospital but stable."

He added: "Two international staff are missing. We have set up a crisis team to deal with the incident."
