'Still much to do' - but Boris gives himself a pat on the back

Boris Johnson: Still much to do
12 April 2012

Boris Johnson gave himself full marks today on his annual report card. With less than 350 days to go until the mayoral election Mr Johnson said Londoners feel safer and are more satisfied with his leadership.

But the Mayor's Annual London Survey also showed that Londoners are calling for cheaper Tube and bus fares and are increasingly concerned about the cost of living in the capital.

Releasing the survey alongside his annual report today, Mr Johnson said he has "achieved a lot over the past year" but admitted that "there is still much to do".

The Mayor's opponents today accused him of attempting to "spin" the results, pointing out that a question that had revealed "safety and policing" as the worst thing about living in London was not asked this year.

A spokesman for the Mayor said: "The Survey questions are reviewed every year. This question was replaced with several other questions that allowed respondents to identify specific concerns on things such as crime, the environment and transport."

Mr Johnson said today that making people in the capital feel safer has been his "first priority" in the last year.

In the survey of more than 1,400 people, 64 per cent said they are not worried about crime in their local area, compared with 54 per cent last year.

Fear of being mugged or attacked on the street has also dropped, from 30 per cent last year to 18 per cent in 2011. But 29 per cent said that they see fewer police officers on their local streets, compared to 20 per cent last year.

In the report, the Mayor said: "The police have had real success in driving [crime] down, with gun crime down 22 per cent in the last year and murder at its lowest level since 1978." Public transport was also safer, he added.
